Kim Dotcom poised for return with Megaupload successor

Internet tycoon Kim Dotcom will launch a new file-sharing site at his Auckland mansion on Sunday, exactly a year after armed police arrested him at the same venue in the world's largest online piracy case.
Dotcom's new venture, mega.co.nz, aims to recreate the success of his Megaupload empire, which boasted 50 million daily visitors and accounted for four percent of all Internet traffic before it was shut down after the police raid.
The 38-year-old, who changed his name from Kim Schmitz, remains free on bail in New Zealand as US authorities seek his extradition on a range of charges including money laundering, racketeering and copyright theft.
They allege Megaupload sites netted more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and cost copyright owners more than $500 million by offering pirated copies of movies, TV shows, music and other content.
Dotcom denies any wrongdoing and the charges, which carry jail terms of up to 20 years, have not discouraged him from launching the new Mega service, which he has enthusiastically promoted on Twitter in recent weeks.
"I think you will be very happy with the new #Mega," he tweeted Friday. "It's like time travel. We'll take you to the future!!!"
The tech entrepreneur has promised an "epic" launch for the new site and even impersonated Willy Wonka to promote it at an Auckland shop on Thursday, handing out tubs of ice cream with golden tickets to the event hidden in them.
Details of the planned service are scarce, but the site promises to use state-of-the-art encryption methods that mean only users, not the site's administrators, know what they are uploading.
That would theoretically stop authorities from accusing administrators of knowingly aiding online piracy, the central allegation facing Dotcom.
Dotcom has said Mega will offer users 50 GB of free storage, significantly more than similar sites such as Dropbox and Google Drive, but most details remain under wraps until they are unveiled Sunday at the Dotcom Mansion.
The German national was preparing for his birthday party at the lavish Auckland property in January last year when armed police staged a dawn raid, tracking him down in a hidden panic room running off his bedroom.
Officers seized more than a dozen luxury cars, including a 1959 pink Cadillac, along with valuable artworks and a sawn-off shotgun, while Dotcom's bank accounts were frozen and he spent more than a month in jail.
Eventually freed on bail, his legal team have enjoyed a number of successes challenging the prosecution case, including a ruling that the police raid was illegal and a government admission that Dotcom was illegally spied upon before his arrest.
The extradition hearing is due to be heard in August.

Facebook's annual hacker competition opens for registration

Social networking giant Facebook has opened registration for its third annual Hacker Cup, set to begin from January 25.
The top prize will be $ 10,000 (approx. Rs 5.5 lakh) as against $ 5,000 (Rs 2.75 lakh) last year and as many 25 of the best hackers will be taken to Facebook's headquarter in USA, a statement said.
The Facebook Hacker Cup is an annual worldwide programming competition where hackers compete against each other for fame, fortune, glory and a shot at the coveted Hacker Cup.
"The competition will be held in two rounds starting with an online qualification, out of which 25 of the best hackers are then flown by Facebook to their headquarters in Menlo Park, CA," Facebook said.

The top prize will be $ 10,000 (approx. Rs 5.5 lakh) as against $ 5,000 (Rs 2.75 lakh) last year and as many 25 of the best hackers will be taken to Facebook's headquarter in USA, a statement said.
"The preliminary round will be held between January 25 and February 16 while the onsite final round is scheduled for March 22-23, 2013.
Contestants will be judged on accuracy and speed as they race to solve algorithmic problems to advance through up to five rounds of programming challenges," it added.
Last year, the Hacker Cup attracted 8,000 participants from 150 countries, with the winner- Roman Andreev, hailing from Russia, Facebook said.
"Hacking is core to how we build at Facebook. Whether we're building a prototype for a major product like Timeline at a Hackathon, creating a smarter search algorithm, or tearing down walls at our new headquarters, we're always hacking to find better ways to solve problems," Facebook said in its Hacker's Cup page.
Facebook said that those who registered for a previous year are automatically registered for the competition year, however, they still need to check their information is up-to-date.

Facebook creates private posts that disappear after being read

Social networking site Facebook has launched a new app which erases pictures and messages within 10 seconds of being sent.

It is an advanced version of one of the the social networking site's original apps, the 'poke'.

The equivalent of a head nod or wink, the 'poke' in its old form is rarely used today as the site has become more advanced, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

It has now been reinvented to be called 'Facebook Poke' and allows users to send fleeting messages, pokes, photos and 10-second videos to friends.

The messages expire after a set period of time, from 1 to 10 seconds, and cannot be retrieved by either party again, making it perfect for sending salacious images without leaving a trail.
Social networking site Facebook has launched a new app which erases pictures and messages within 10 seconds of being sent.
"With the Poke app, you can poke or send a message, photo, or video to Facebook friends to share what you're up to in a lightweight way," said the site in a blog post announcing the new app.

When you open the app, you can choose from a set of icons at the bottom of the screen to send a poke, type a 120-character message, open the camera to snap a picture - you cannot choose an existing photo - or shoot a 10-second video.

You then decide how long you want the recipient to see the message for.

It is said the new facility is similar to Snapchat, an app which is popular with younger age users, and which has gained a reputation as a tool for sending risque images.

Facebook is encouraging users to report inappropriate messages.

"If you ever see something you're uncomfortable with, you can click the gear menu and report it," the paper quoted the company as saying.

5 Sites to compare prices online.

When shopping online, you often end up browsing several sites to look for its price and also what discount or offers are available. And if you are a regular online shopper, then you will know that the prices, especially the discounts on products, vary from one site to another. And not to forget the additional benefits like coupons and even reward points, which means more money in your pocket. But then, browsing several sites is cumbersome to say the least and you may even miss out on some. What you then need is a tool or a site that will actually do all the work for you and bring you results from the whole range of sites. Featured here are some sites that allow you to compare prices, not only for online retailers, but some of them also provide you with prices from offline retailers. How To Find Who Unfriends You Or Decline Your Friend Request

fb unfriend
We all use Facebook daily. Sending friend requests to our friends especially. But there are some people who didn’t accept our friend request. Also some others unfriend us from their friend-list. So here I have a solution to see who unfriends us or declines our friend request. While surfing on internet I found this script which is working perfectly in all browsers.

How This Script Works :
This is a realtime script. A local database keeps the records of our friend list and compared at each refresh. It enables a menu named Unfriends that let us know the persons that are previously your friend but now removed you.  This script works on all browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera etc..

 Steps :

Step 1 : Download Unfriend Finder Script as per your browser.
Step 2 : If you have Google Chrome Browser it will directly download on you browser just after clicking on Add button when a dialog box prompts.

But if you use Mozilla Firefox you have to download Greasemonkey Addon in your browser
That’ it.
After Installation of script Unfriends menu will be created near Home menu. And you can find who unfriends you and decline your friend request.

Want to contact a stranger on Facebook? Pay $1

Several months after Facebook started testing promoted status messages, the social networking website on Friday said it will start "a small experiment" around paid messages.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the website said that it is making several changes to efficiently deliver messages that Facebook users get. As part of the new measures, it is rolling out an experimental feature that will allow a Facebook user to send a priority message to other user even if he is not a 'friend' at a nominal charge of $1. The current rate for the message is not final and Facebook may change it in future.
The service will be initially available only in the US and number of messages that can be send to a user will be capped at one per week.
Several months after Facebook started testing promoted status messages, the social networking website on Friday said it will start "a small experiment" around paid messages.
"We've heard that messages people care about may not always be delivered or may go unseen in the Other folder," the website noted in the statement.
It then explained that currently there are two kind of mail boxes Facebook users have. The Inbox is where they get messages from their friends while the Other is where the messages from strangers go.
"Facebook Messages is designed to get the most relevant messages into your Inbox and put less relevant messages into your Other folder. We rely on signals about the message to achieve this goal," the website noted in its statement. "Today we're starting a small experiment to test the usefulness of economic signals to determine relevance. This test will give a small number of people the option to pay to have a message routed to the Inbox rather than the Other folder of a recipient that they are not connected with."
The feature can also be used by the Android users of Facebook Messenger. To use Facebook Messenger on Android, users don't have to be a member of the social networking website.
Earlier Facebook had started an experimental feature that allowed people to promote their status message so that it reaches all their friends. Currently the feature is available to select users in several countries and costs $7 per status message.

Facebook's Privacy Shortcuts option makes it easier to find Settings

Have you spotted the new icon between the Home option and the scroll wheel icon in the top-right corner on Facebook? Well, that is the Privacy shortcuts option; you can identify it by the lock icon. Simply put, the new option makes it easier for users to find their Settings. Facebook shares that the Privacy shortcuts option is part of Facebook's ongoing effort to bring privacy controls to the fore, right where users share their content.
When users click on the lock icon on Facebook, a tiny drop-down box opens, and allows users to pick between three queries – Who can see my stuff? Who can contact me? How do I stop someone from bothering me? Alternatively, they can choose to pick between some other 'Settings' options too, which they can access by clicking on 'See More Settings'. Here users can alter, view and save the privacy settings as per their liking.
Users can choose between different areas like General, Security, Privacy, Timeline and Tagging, and others to make changes to. Facebook has updated the location of some settings to make it easier for users to find them and has also included tools to help users manage their content.
Latest updates in this respect include:
New privacy shortcuts at the top of the page A new Request and Removal tool for managing multiple photos you're tagged in Settings are easier to get to, and some have been reworded in plainer language.
Interestingly, where users share posts and photos throughout Facebook, they will be able to spot 'new education' about how to control all that they are sharing. These include reminders of the content that users have hidden from your timeline may still appear in their news feed, search and other places on Facebook. Further, to explain things better, Facebook has elaborated upon the setting updates with a detailed list.
These have been listed under Introducing a new setting, Settings that have moved inline next to the things they control, Existing settings and tools, now also available in privacy shortcuts, and Settings that have been updated, including language changes and moving to a different page. To view a detailed explanation of these, click here.
Earlier reports had elaborated upon Facebook unveiling a new privacy "shortcut" at the top-right hand corner of the website for quick access to important controls.
Facebook is planning to introduce yet another feature to its kitty – the ‘self destructing’ chat message. The Snapchat-like app, which will destroy messages after having been received, is said to be in the testing stage.
Snapchat became a much used app and became prominent because of its ability to destroy messages within 10 seconds of being sent. A user can send messages that destroy themselves not only from their phones, but the receiver’s phone as well. Snapchat even destroys matter from its own servers. The company even added video capabilities to the app. Clearly, this app became very popular with the youth who used it to exchange messages and photographs.
Facebook too will be looking at implementing similar functions in its chat app, including the capability of deciding the amount of time the message or image remains visible. This move is part of Facebook’s blitzkrieg addition of features to its apps including standalone ones like Messenger and Camera.

DABANNG 2 REVIEW

Dabangg 2 will centre around Chulbul Pandey as its central character. Only the backdrop this time round will be a posh metropolitan city and not a gaon. You see, Chulcul Pandey will be transferred to a city and will mingle with the elite, but will retain his simplistic flavour and values.

Dabangg 2 encashes two brands completely - Salman Khan and Dabangg itself. The film works more for the actor than for the film itself. A feast for the superstar's fans and a one-time watch for the rest.

It wouldn't be wrong to say Salman Khan is the Rajinikanth of Hindi film industry. He can swing villains around like a yo-yo, beat them down to pulp, fly from a place to the other, run faster than a cheetah and cause earth to shatter while making an entry. What's best, he can execute this all while making it look believable. So while people say a Salman Khan starrer doesn't quite need a strong story for his presence alone can make the movie work, Arbaaz Khan Debuts into direction by taking the legacy of Salman's blockbuster Dabangg forward with its sequel. Whether he brings a blend of story and star power or not let's find out.

Quite unlike the sequels being made in the industry which hold no relevance to their predecessor, Dabangg 2 takes off as a continuation of its first part. Chulbul Pandey, who's now a family man with a wife Rajjo (Sonakshi Sinha), a father Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna) and brother Makhi (Arbaaz Khan), gets a transfer from Lalganj to the big city of Kanpur. The league may now have become bigger and the goons more villainous but it only takes two fights for this Robin Hood Pandey to claim his status of a super cop in the city. While he comes hard on the criminals and notoriously robs the rich and helps the poor, he also ruffles feathers with Baccha Singh a big political hoodlum. Worse still, he ends up killing Baccha Bhaiyya's beloved brother Genda (Deepak Dobriyal) setting off a rage amongst Baccha and his troupe that only wants to settle scores by killing Chulbul. The rest of the stories comprises of a battle between Baccha and Chulbul.

Debutant director Arbaaz Khan takes over the baton from Abhinav Kashyap who made Dabangg and instead of bringing in much change in the cast and story he retains almost everything from the first part. As an astute businessman and also the producer, Arbaaz keeps all the tried and tested elements of blockbuster Dabangg that potently raised Salman Khan to his stardom.

The film all in all has 5-7 fight sequences, 5-7 grand hero entries of Salman with loud background score, 5-7 songs and characters repeated from Salman's earlier hits. Some of the sequences are literally repeated in order to click with the masses. The film may just have one of the most done to death plots executed in a very done to death format but yet again it will still be watched and rejoiced by Salman Khan fans. Reason? For Arbaaz celebrates the stardom of his big brother and makes sure that his fans get their worth for money.

Arbaaz gives Salman a freehand to essay his part keeping his fans choices in mind and the latter who clearly knows by now what works with his fans takes his character of a mischievously smart and righteous cop forward by bringing newer shades to his character. The superstar brings a perfect blend romance, emotions, comedy and action. One also sees the macho cop's boyish side as he converses with his father.

Sonakshi Sinha this time around too doesn't get much to offer to the film except for 2-3 expressions and 2-3 songs but still looks a perfect match for the personality of Salman Khan. Prakash Raj comes across as a good replacement for Sonu Sood. His character and antics are similar to his earlier Bollywood films Wanted and Singham but still doesn't appear jaded in this one.

The rest of the cast including the likes of Vinod Khanna, Niketan Dheer and Deepak Dobriyal are decent in their parts. Kareena Kapoor's item number although has hit it off with the masses in the film appears needlessly inserted. Music by Sajid Wajid also is pretty much like a rehash of the first part.

To sum it up, Dabangg 2 encashes two brands completely - Salman Khan and Dabangg itself. The film works more for the actor than for the film itself. A feast for the superstar's fans and a one-time watch for the rest.

How to Hack-proof Your Wireless Router

OK, so I know there is no such thing as "hack-proof" or "hacker-proof", just like there is nothing out there that is completely "water-proof", let's just say that in this article we're going to learn how to make your wireless router as "hacker-resistant" as possible. Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get down to business.
Your wireless router is a prime target for hackers wanting to infiltrate your network or freeload off your Wi-Fi connection. Here are some things you can do to make your wireless router harder to hack:
Enable WPA2 Wireless Encryption and Create a Strong SSID Network Name and Strong Pre-shared Key
If you aren't using Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2) encryption to protect your wireless network then you might as well leave your front door wide open because hackers can virtually walk right into your network. If you're using outdated Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security, which is easily cracked in seconds by most hackers, you should consider upgrading to WPA2. Older routers may need a firmware upgrade to add WPA2 functionality. Check your router manufacturer's manual to learn how to enable WPA2 wireless encryption on your router.

You will also need to make a strong SSID (wireless network name). If you are using your router's default network name (i.e. Linksys, Netgear, DLINK, etc) then you are making it easier for hackers to hack your network. Using a default SSID or one that is on the Top 1000 Most Common SSID names helps hackers in their quest to crack your encryption because they can use pre-built rainbow tables associated with common SSID names to crack your wireless encryption.
Create a lengthy and random SSID name even though it might be hard to remember. You should also use a strong password for your pre-shared key to further discourage hacking attempts.
Turn on Your Wireless Router's Firewall
If you haven't already done so, you should consider enabling your wireless router's built-in firewall. Enabling the firewall can help to make your network less visible to hackers looking for targets on the Internet. Many router-based firewalls have a "stealth mode" that you can enable to help reduce your network's visibility. You will also want to test your firewall to ensure that you have configured it correctly.
Use an encrypted personal VPN service at the router level
Virtual Private Networks used to be a luxury that could only be afforded by large corporations. Now you can buy your own personal VPN service for a small monthly fee. A personal VPN is one of the biggest roadblocks you can throw at a hacker. A personal VPN has the capability to anonymize your true location with a proxied IP address and can also put up a wall of strong encryption to protect your network traffic. You can purchase personal VPN service from vendors such as WiTopia, StrongVPN, and others for as little as $10 a month or less.
If your router supports personal VPN service at the router level then this would be the best way to implement a personal VPN as it allows you to encrypt all traffic entering and leaving your network without the hassle of setting up VPN client software on your computers. Using the personal VPN service at the router level also takes the encryption process burden off of your client PCs and other devices. If you want to use a personal VPN at the router level, check to see if your router is VPN-capable. Buffalo Technologies has several routers with this capability as do other router manufacturers.
Disable the "Admin Via Wireless" feature on your router
Another way to help prevent hackers from messing with your wireless router is to disable the "admin via wireless" setting. When you disable the "admin via wireless" feature on your router it makes it so that only someone who is physically connected to your router via an Ethernet cable can access the admin features of your wireless router. This helps to prevent someone from driving by your house and accessing the administrative functions of your router if they've compromised your Wi-Fi encryption.
Given enough time and resources a hacker might still be able to hack into your network, but taking the steps above will make your network a harder target which will hopefully frustrate a hacker and cause them to move on to an easier target.

Instagram has not yet figured out a way to make money, but some of its users have

Instagram, the picture-sharing application that Facebook bought earlier this year, has not yet figured out a way to make money. But some of its users have.
These entrepreneurs have realized that they can piggyback on the popularity of Instagram, which has more than 100 million users, and create their own businesses, some of which have turned out to be quite profitable. They join a long line of innovators who have found creative ways to build new services on top of existing sites and platforms.
Services like Printstagram, for example, let people turn their Instagram images into prints, wall calendars and stickers. A group of designers are building a digital picture frame for Instagram photos. Some early users of the service are leveraging their expertise and sizable followings and starting consulting agencies, advising big-name brands on how best to use Instagram themselves.
Instagram, the picture-sharing application that Facebook bought earlier this year, has not yet figured out a way to make money. But some of its users have.
And others have simply realized that the app is a great place to post photos of things they are trying to sell. Jenn Nguyen, 26, who lives in Irvine, Calif., has 8,300 followers on Instagram, where she posts images of lavishly made-up women who are wearing her brand of false eyelashes.
"When we post a new picture of someone wearing our lashes, we instantly see sales," she said.
Nguyen is part of a wave of entrepreneurial Instagrammers who have transformed their feeds into virtual shop windows, full of handmade jewelry, retro eyewear, high-end sneakers, cute baking accessories, vintage clothing and custom artwork.
Those who want to sell things on Instagram have to resort to surprisingly low-tech tactics. Instagram does not allow users to add links to their photo posts, so merchants have to list a phone number for placing orders, or hope their followers will type the Web address of their store into a browser.
Shoppers seem willing to put up with that hassle. Nguyen said that during a recent holiday sale, she offered Instagram followers a coupon for 35 percent off their orders. That day, she said, she netted 100 orders, about $4,000 in sales, up from her usual $500. In her photo captions she mentions her online store and highlights products that are new or soon to be sold out.
Most of the people taking this sales approach are small-scale entrepreneurs and artists, looking for another way to find customers for their consignment shops and jewelry businesses.
Hundreds of larger companies and big-name brands have accounts on Instagram, but only a few have taken steps toward actually selling there. Bergdorf Goodman, the luxury retailer, has posted photographs of women's shoes and jewelry alongside telephone numbers for the store.
Instagram is a compelling medium "because a photo translates to any language," said Liz Eswein, one of the founders of the Mobile Media Lab, a digital agency focused entirely on helping companies figure out their Instagram strategies. "It's easier to get lost in the shuffle on other networks" like Facebook and Twitter, she added.
Eswein, Brian DiFeo and Anthony Danielle formed the company in March after realizing that their collective Instagram followers - nearly 850,000 - and understanding of the service could be valuable to companies like Nike, Delta, Samsung and Marc Jacobs who were hoping to reach fans of their brands. Now Mobile Media Lab runs promotions and special campaigns for those clients and others.
"We aren't saying 'Click here and buy this product' - it's more about putting the image in their head and introducing them to a product within the service," said Eswein.
In that way, it's closer to traditional advertising, DiFeo said: "It's classic marketing. You see an ad on a billboard, or on a bus as it goes by, on TV and now, in an Instagram post. It sticks."
The mini-industries cropping up on and around Instagram are fueled by the service's explosive growth. In April, Instagram had 25 million users. Eight months later it has quadrupled that figure and amassed more than 5 billion photos. In October, the mobile service had 7.8 million daily active visitors, according to comScore, more than Twitter's 6.6 million.
Both Facebook and Instagram declined to talk about how Instagram might make money directly. But analysts suspect that Facebook will try to weave advertising into the Instagram app at some point, much as it has with its own app.
"We're seeing a huge uptick in images in content marketing across the board," said Rebecca Lieb, an analyst at Altimeter Group, a firm that advises companies on how best to use technology. "Marketers are moving away from written content and toward images and videos."
It isn't hard to imagine a case where some images on Instagram are paid for by companies and highlighted to ensure that users see them, Lieb said. "We're already seeing that on Facebook and Twitter."
Since its early days, Instagram has invited developers and entrepreneurs to tap its technology and build their own applications on its shoulders, like ways to view galleries of Instagram pictures on the Web instead of a phone. And it has not tried to charge for this privilege.
Kartik Hosanagar, an associate professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania who studies online commerce, said there was a new breed of "social research and development" emerging, one that lent itself to a tremendous - but risky - opportunity for opportunistic and creative entrepreneurs.
"The small guys take the risk, and if they find something that sticks, the larger company can seize on it and take a cut," he said. "It's hard to predict in advance, but that's the beauty and opportunity of a platform and why we see so many businesses built on other platforms."
But other Internet companies have turned on their heels and cut off the add-on services that helped expand their appeal to users. The most recent example is Twitter. At first the company welcomed outside innovators who built tools for searching messages and posting photos, among other things. Then it felt pressure from investors to make money and started to shut off access.
Kevin Systrom, one of Instagram's founders and its chief executive, has said that he will consider e-commerce as a possible source of revenue for the service, although the company has not taken any steps toward that so far.
In an email, Systrom said Instagram had no plans to curb Instagram-dependent services anytime soon, as long as they did not violate Instagram's policies.
Benjamin Lotan, 27, who runs a company called Social Print Studio in Berkeley, Calif., which sells Printstagram products, along with other things, said he wasn't taking any chances with his business, particularly since Facebook is feeling pressure to become a more lucrative company over all.
Lotan, who started his business in early 2011, said it now generated around $1.5 million in revenue annually. Although he said he was not too concerned about the viability of the company at the moment, he was planning to begin releasing products that were not wholly dependent on access to Instagram.
"We aren't really nervous," he said. "But you can never really know."

4 Secrets Wireless Hackers Don't Want You to Know

You're using a wireless access point that has encryption so you're safe, right? Wrong! Hackers want you to believe that you are protected so you will remain vulnerable to their attacks. Here are 4 things that wireless hackers hope you won't find out, otherwise they might not be able to break into your network and/or computer:
1. WEP encryption is useless for protecting your wireless network. WEP is easily cracked within minutes and only provides users with a false sense of security.
Even a mediocre hacker can defeat Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)-based security in a matter of minutes, making it essentially useless as a protection mechanism. Many people set their wireless routers up years ago and have never bothered to change their wireless encryption from WEP to the newer and stronger WPA2 security. Updating your router to WPA2 is a fairly simple process. Visit your wireless router manufacturer's website for instructions.
You're using a wireless access point that has encryption so you're safe, right? Wrong! Hackers want you to believe that you are protected so you will remain vulnerable to their attacks. Here are 4 things that wireless hackers hope you won't find out, otherwise they might not be able to break into your network and/or computer:
2. Using your wireless router's MAC filter to prevent unauthorized devices from joining your network is ineffective and easily defeated.
Every piece of IP-based hardware, whether it's a computer, game system, printer, etc, has a unique hard-coded MAC address in its network interface. Many routers will allow you to permit or deny network access based on a device's MAC address. The wireless router inspects the MAC address of the network device requesting access and compares it your list of permitted or denied MACs. This sounds like a great security mechanism but the problem is that hackers can "spoof" or forge a fake MAC address that matches an approved one. All they need to do is use a wireless packet capture program to sniff (eavesdrop) on the wireless traffic and see which MAC addresses are traversing the network. They can then set their MAC address to match one of that is allowed and join the network.

3. Disabling your wireless router's remote administration feature can be a very effective measure to prevent a hacker from taking over your wireless network.
Many wireless routers have a setting that allows you to administer the router via a wireless connection. This means that you can access all of the routers security settings and other features without having to be on a computer that is plugged into the router using an Ethernet cable. While this is convenient for being able to administer the router remotely, it also provides another point of entry for the hacker to get to your security settings and change them to something a little more hacker friendly. Many people never change the factory default admin passwords to their wireless router which makes things even easier for the hacker. I recommend turning the "allow admin via wireless" feature off so only someone with a physical connection to the network can attempt to administer the wireless router settings.
4. If you use public hotspots you are an easy target for man-in-the-middle andsession hijacking attacks.
Hackers can use tools like Firesheep and AirJack to perform "man-in-the-middle" attacks where they insert themselves into the wireless conversation between sender and receiver. Once they have successfully inserted themselves into the line of communications, they can harvest your account passwords, read your e-mail, view your IMs, etc. They can even use tools such as SSL Strip to obtain passwords for secure websites that you visit. I recommend using a commercial VPN service provider to protect all of your traffic when you are using wi-fi networks. Costs range from $7 and up per month. A secure VPN provides an additional layer of security that is extremely difficult to defeat. Unless the hacker is extremely determined they will most likely move on and try an easier target.
